Pros and cons of living abroad. Life of an expat
On November 10, 2022 by marghevivianiDoes living abroad will make you happier? Well, it depends from person to person. Many factors will make your life abroad easy or difficult: personal qualities, intentions, expectations, money, courage, and even destiny.

When I was 13 I felt like I don’t belong in the place where I was living at that time. I wanted to leave everything and go traveling. And my wish was heard: two years later I am preparing bags to fly to Japan. And there was no end: Japan, Thailand, Korea, 6 years in China, one year in Indonesia, and now already two years in Italy. I’d lived in 12 countries in 11 years!
I can say that it wasn’t always easy. I had many cries during packing, homesickness, discussion with my family, and really hard moments. Together with that, there were peaceful lonely trips, meeting new people, new experiences, and many trials to make me stronger. I recommend giving it a try, even though is not for everyone!
In this post, I put all together the positives and negatives I had to experience during all these years. Moreover, in every country, it won’t be the same. For example, I was so happy and balanced living in Asia and completely down when I moved to Italy.
My first experience of life as an expat started in Asia. There I went only for work, but then fell in love with it. In total, I spent 8 years in Asia. And there I met my love, which made me move to Italy. So I decided to do some scarifications to be close to my husband, I left my job and family and moved to Europe. Here everything did a backflip, that I wasn’t ready for. I thought that I am a pro at adapting to a new country, but not here. I can even say that almost all the negatives I experienced exactly in Italy. It took me years to get used to living here. But I keep missing my Asia anyway 🙂
The more you travel, the more experience you get and then you start comparing one country with the other. But sometimes it’s better to stop comparing and enjoy the place where you are now. As we say in Russia: “Is better where we aren’t”. And there will be always something that you don’t like, the world is not perfect and you better accept it.
Here is my list of pros and cons of living abroad:
Pros | Cons |
Get a fresh start | Language barrier |
Try new food | Culture shock |
Learn foreign language | Homesickness |
Make lifelong friends | Expensive |
Experience new culture | A lot of paperwork |
Personal growth | You’ll be an outsider |
Boost your confidence | Loneliness |
Learn to adapt | Your favourite things may not be available |
Everyday as an adventure | Tax implications |
Become more independent | It’s difficult to become a citizen |
Learn what you really need | New Social Rules to Adapt to |
Get a better job* | Too difficult to find a job* |
* In Asia I was working very very well and earning enough money for my living. Instead in Italy, I found a lot of difficulties to earn a little.
Takeaway
Also, our destiny or our energy can influence the experience of living abroad. For example, my vibrations after Asia was not corresponding with the vibrations of the majority in Italy, and I start having many problems. But after all, as every human, I was able to adapt also to such a diversity of culture.
The most important thing is to listen to your own heart. Traveling is not the same thing as immigrating. Before better, if you travel and explore the world, live a little bit there, a little bit here. And one day you will decide where you feel better. Maybe after all your country is the best place to stay 😉
